Education for the Betterment of life

This is accomplished in three ways:

1. Continue to improve and operate the two preschools, Anamali and Chitramali.

2. Provide scholarships to bright students whose parents are unable to support them though university.

a) Continue to improve and operate the two pre-schools

Anamali Pre School: The school was built by the Sahana Foundation in 2005 at the request of the village and has been successfully operated since then. Children around 5 years spend one year at the pre school (kindergarten) before enrolling in grade 1 of the normal school. A pre school had been the dream of the villagers for several years and they have contributed they are deeply involved in the running of the school. Each year a batch of about 25 students graduate from the school in the village of Jotikoratuwa. The children who joined the school in January 2010 have now completed their school year successfully.

Chitramali Pre School: in the village of Kadabadegama – a batch of 30 students graduated in December 2009. Since a larger number of new students wished to enroll in January 2010, the Sahana Foundation built a new class room during the vacation period and 60 little children were able to join the Pre School this year. The children have now completed their school year and successfully graduated

The schools are being successfully run and quality controlled with participation of the parents who help the school in different ways. No fees are charged and the schools are funded through contributions from our guests “Friends of Barberyn” and the Barberyn owners.

Apart from a sound education and start in life to the young children, the schools also provide an opportunity for the young teachers to do the practical component after they complete their teacher training.

b) Morning meal for school children

In January 2007, the Sahana foundation commenced giving a group of about 100 school children a morning meal at school. The programme undertaken with the cooperation of the teachers and the parents of Dharma rajah School in Weligama helps children who would otherwise come to school hungry, or not come to school at all.

It is our intention to extend this programme of food for school children to the two pre schools, if we can gather the resources.

c) Scholarships to bright young students

In Sri Lanka University education is free. How ever there are many students who are unable to make use of this opportunity because they cannot afford the money to spend for books and accommodation and other incidental. The Sahana Foundation currently supports several students with their higher education and the intention is to increase the number.
