Bodhi School Help

C) Anamali Preschool in the village of Joti Koratuwa

The village consists of 85 households. The villagers have lost their livelihood with the destruction of the boats. Villagers desire to establish a preschool in the community centre building for children from age 3 – 5 years. The building is self-contained and seems most appropriate for the purpose. It is an empty building. The villagers are well organized and it is the intention of the village committee to run the place.

We visited the place with the Member of Parliament and a few minutes later the whole village appeared to have gathered there. The village consists of 364 people. 20 children are under 3 years. 19 children are between 3 to 5 years. A few children who are over 5 years are still not going to the normal school. As fisher folk they live from day to day. Since the Tsunami destroyed their boats they have no money at all. Since then they have been relying on others to give them food. The Government has given some dry rations of rice and lentils and tinned fish. They have been eating this for the last month. The women told us the difficulties that the older children have in going to school. The women would like to learn a craft and develop ways of supplementing the household income. They said they know to sew and make lace, and do rope work. The project will bring hope to the village.

We will supplement their dry rations and give the children below 3 years milk supplements where needed.

The Barberyn building supervisors will work with the villagers to prepare a cost estimate of the facilities required to establish the preschool.

The images tell the story of our visit.

Barberyn staff have been working very hard together with the village and the preschool opening story will be posted soon.

The Pres school named " Anamali" was opened on 20 May 2005 and is now operational. The images tell the story of the celebrations and the joy of the village."
