We welcome you to the Sudana Rodrigo Sahana Foundation.

“Sahana” is the Sinhala word for “compassionate help.” Sahana Foundation was established with the support and encouragement of “Friends of Barberyn” to continue the community development work that evolved as a response to the tsunami that touched the lives of countless people in the coastal areas of Sri Lanka on 26 December 2004.

Barberyn has been involved in community development for over four decades since the building of our original resort Barberyn Reef in Beruwala, in 1968. Barberyn Reef pioneered the development of tourism in the southern coast in Sri Lanka. With the opening of Barberyn Beach in Weligama in 2003, we expanded establishing sustainable links between the resort and the community. The Sahana Foundation is thus dedicated to the memory of Sudana and Chitra Rodrigo, the Founders of Barberyn, for their pioneering spirit, for their philosophy of giving, and their commitment to the welfare of the staff and the people in the community.

The Sahana Foundation has moved beyond the work related to the tsunami and with the support of Friends of Barberyn, we have been able to make a rapid progress in several key areas relating to education, medical care and spiritual development.

The Sahana Foundation is as much yours as it is ours. We would like you to browse through the pages – see the stories unfold, and be a part of this development. Together we can make a difference.

Who We Are

Sahana is the Sinhala word for “compassionate help.”

With the support and encouragement of friends of Barberyn, we have established a foundation to continue the community development work that evolved as a response to the Tsunami that touched the lives of countless people in the coastal areas of Sri Lanka on 26 December 2004.

Barberyn has been involved in community development for over four decades since the building of our original resort Barberyn Reef in Beruwala, in 1968.

Barberyn Reef pioneered the development of tourism in the southern coast in Sri Lanka. With the opening of our new resort Barberyn Beach in Weligama in 2003, we expanded and establishing sustainable links between the resort and the community. The Sahana Foundation is thus dedicated to the memory of Sudana and Chitra Rodrigo, the Founders of Barberyn, for their pioneering spirit, for their philosophy of giving, and their commitment to the welfare of the staff and the people in the community.

Sustainability

The foundation has continued to ensure that the projects are need driven, and that the beneficiaries take ownership of the projects from the start, and that they are sustainable. Each village and community has a culture of its own and for the long term success it is necessary to understand the dynamics of each village and get the beneficiaries to take ownership.

The Foundation has also kept its commitments and earned the trust of the beneficiaries The beneficiaries are encouraged to take ownership and contribute their skills in implementing the projects. The Barberyn Staff supervises the projects and we personally ensure that the projects are implemented in the most cost effective and efficient manner. Funds received and spent are carefully recorded and monitored. At the core of every project lies the goal of sustainability and self-reliance.

Funding of the activities

The finances for the Sahana foundation come from the Barberyn Group of Companies and contribution of guests from Barberyn Reef and Barberyn Beach Resorts.

An innovative funding scheme has been formulated for the operation of the two pre-schools through a birthday calendar where by guests can donate the sum required for a month. Approximately Euro 800.00 is required for the Anamali Pre -school of about 50 students and Euro 1100.00 for the Chitramali Pre School which has currently 75 students. Whenever there is a shortfall the Barberyn Group of Companies helps and also bears all administrative costs including time cost of staff and transport etc.

Each contribution received, what ever its nature and size is valued and the Directors personally supervise the implementation of the projects.
